The Cigarette
Gray paper folding back and burning over fire. Ash stacks on ash then falls. Embers glowing and turning white to black. Leaves turned to white smoke and inhaled through a soggy, yellow filter. The papers glue falters and smoke drifts from the tube. Burning slowly, then quicker when touching yellow lips and tar stained teeth. The filter smolders plasticy bitter, then snuffed on a pile of butts in a Lucky Strike ash tray from Cubes. The fire dies in black, tarry syrup on top of Camels, Marlboros, Pall Malls, and Bugler stacked for weeks on a porch railing in a silver bowl.
